Some Scholarly Articles

Shakespeare After All

Perhaps the single most useful piece for Midsummer (and any play, really.) I only have my kindle copy with me and forgot to scan it so COMING SOON.
The Myth of Theseus and the Minotaur

This is a great article that mirrors the structure of Midsummer to Greek Mythology. It goes into myth, structure, symbolism, and a little bit of character. Although the title is about Theseus, the article touches on most major characters. .

Lost Days and Midsummer

An article about where the time goes in Midsummer. An interesting read, as the play states that four days go by but seemingly only a night does. Shakespeare was generally unconcerned with time in his play except when there's a time pressure (R&J) so don't go insane trying to make a timeline because there isn't one.

Use Me As Your Spaniel

The first half of this article is about The Faerie Queene, so read the introduction then skip to page 501 where she picks up with Midsummer at "A redemptive view of sexuality..." A newer, edgier piece of scholarship about sex and sexuality within MIDSUMMER from a feminist and queer scholarship perspective. This article was one of the first to argue that "side" is a term for female genitalia.

Mozart, Shakespeare and the Art of Maurice Sendak

Skip down to the Shakespeare section to read about how Shakespeare changes the tradition of the changeling boy in a discussion between Maurice Sendak, Stephan Greenblatt, and Wye Allanbrook.
